At least once every year they vacation for a week at a sister’s home, and this year it was with Mrs. John Kemp. Left to right are Mrs. W. R. Tinder, Mrs. LaPrade Jones, Mrs. J. W. Massey, Mrs. Ralph Brown and Miss Lucy Biscoe. Mrs. Kemp is seated behind Mrs. Brown and Miss Biscoe. These sisters are the daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mrs. J. H. Biscoe of Orange, Va. New Members Added To Wakelon Faculty Two posts on the Wakelon School faculty have yet to be filled, according to Principal John J. Hicks. These are high school mathematics and a first grade. Other positions filled on the faculty are: Miss Phyllis Ann Coley, 21, of Stem who will teach third grade. She is a 1956 graduate of East Carolina College with a degree in primary education. -> Teaching fourth grade will be Miss Peggy Mangum, 21, of Wal stonburg. She has a degree in primary education from East Carolina College. Mrs. Emily A. Mitchell, 24, of near Wendell has been employed to teach fourth-fifth combination. She is a graduate of Atlantic Christian College and taught the last two years at Clayton. Miss Alma Lou Pierce, 21, who was bom in Franklin County, will be in charge of one of the seventh grades. She attended Meredith and was graduated from Atlantic Christian College. Robert P. Moore, 26, will teach eighth grade and work as a coach in the athletic department. He is a native of Pitt County and is married to the former Dorothy Anderson of Wilson. He was graduated from Atlantic Christian College, and last year was a mem ber of Pikeville High School faculty. At Wakelon he will be assistant football coach, head coach of the girls’ basketball team and head baseball coach. Replacing Charles Hester as coach is Vaughan D. Fowler of Franklin, Va. He is 25-years-old, and has a degree from East Caro Pastor Named Alumni Officer The Rev. Troy J. Barrett has been elected treasurer of the Duke University Divinity School Alumni Association for 1957-58. The Rev. Mr. Barrett is of the Class of ’48. President of the Alumni Associa tion is Dr. A. Purnell Bailey, who has a syndicated column in many daily papers over the United States. The election were held at a recent luncheon meeting on the Duke campus. lina College in physical education and social studies. He is married. During 1955-56 he was a line coach of Greenville High School. Miss Barbara Jean Kelly, 22, will be in the English department. She is a native of Henderson and a 1957 graduate of Woman’s Col lege of the University of North Carolina. Heading the piano and choral departments will be Miss Nell Newb>, 22, of Thomasville. She was graduated from Salem College in June with a degree in piano and choral work. Herbert J. Ireland, 27, is the new leader of the band. Night The Carmen Flowers Garden Club will hold its second sum* mer meeting Monday night, July 8, in the home of Mrs. A. S. Hinton. Mrs. Tom Scarbor ough will be co-hostess. Mrs. Lillian Clay of Wendell will be the guest speaker. She | will use the topic of the process iing and drying of flowers for | winter arrangements. The meeting* will get under I way at 8 o’clock. COURT NEWS Woman Receives Sentence For Chasing Children Mrs. Jodie Brantley was sen tenced to four months in jail last Wednesday after witnesses testi fied in the local Recorder’s Court that she had trespassed on her neighbors’ lands in chasing lit tle children from their yards in to their homes. Mrs. Brantley tes tified that the children worried her with the noise they were mak ing pitching horseshoes. Cases heard at the June 12 and 26 terms include: 6020. Owen Thomas High, car rying concealed weapon, not guil ty. 6021. Owen Thomas High, pos session of non-taxpaid liquor, 90 days suspended on payment of $50 fine and costs, and payment of $33 bill to hospital. 6035. Melvin Lucas, assault with deadly weapon, 8 months sus pended on payment of $200 fine and costs. 6036. Roy Mangum, assault with deadly weapon, 4 months suspend ed on payment of $100 fine and costs. 6066. James William Darden, speeding 67 miles per houh, $30 (Continued on Page 8) Leam-to-Swim Classes for Adults In Rec. Program Beginning Monday, Zebulon Recreation Commission will offer learn-to-swim lessons for adults. These lessons will be given at Lake Glad under the direction of Miss Gayle Privette, summer recrea tional director. The lessons will be held twice a week at nights for three weeks. The evenings and time are to be set. During these session instruc tion in life saving practices will be demonstrated. Miss Privette says a charge of 30 cents will be required of each person participating. All adults who are unable to swim are urged to take advantage of this free leam-to-swim pro gram. Parents, especially, are re quested to participate in this phase of the summer program. Post Office Loses First Class Rating Held for One Year Patrolman Leaves For Summer Duty Patrolman First Class B. K. rucker has been assigned three month’s tour of duty by the State Highway Patrol headquarters in the Wilmintgon area. Patrolman Tucker’s assignment is through the height of the sum mer holiday season. He will return to the Zebulon area in September. During that period patrolmen from other areas will keep a careful eye on the drivers of this vicinity. WMS Meeting Hopkins Chapel Baptist Church WMS will hold its regular meeting Tuesday, July 9, in the home of Mrs. Mary F. Martin. The time of the meeting is 8 o’clock, and all members are urg ed to attend and visitors are cordially welcomed. Zebulon Post Office lost its first class rating Monday. Postmaster M. J. Sexton made the announcement after receiving orders from U. S. postal authori ties in Washington, D. C. The local post office reverted to a second class institution because of the lossage of parcel post re ceipts. When the gross parcel post re ceipts of a post office totals $40,000 or more, it can be put in the first class bracket. In the fiscal year 1955-56 Zebu j Ion Post Office crossed the $40, 000-a-year mark and was auto matically put in the first class category. According to Postmaster Sex ton gross receipts from the 1956 57 fiscal year were about $39,240. The local post office’s first class position was gained because of the heavy volume of parcels shipped ! by the local Devil Dog Manufac turing Company. The local manufacturing com pany boosted the postal receipts, causing the local post office to gain its first class status, Postmas ter Sexten said. Ralph Bunn, Jr. James Archie Gainey Scouts Leave Monday for 4th National Jamboree me luggage or James Arcme Gainey and Ralph “Bunny” Bunn, Jr. is packed, and they are ready for their “once in a lifetime” ex perience at the Fourth National Scout Jamboree to be held July 12 to 18 at historic Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Gainey is the son of Mrs. Ray Gainey of East Sycamore St. and the late Mr. Gainey, and Bunny is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bunn of West Horton. The local Jamboree party will leave on July 8 and go to Valley Forge by chartered bus. Enroute they will visit Washington, D. C., and Fort George Meade, Mary land, they will reach Valley Forge on July 9 and immediately set up their camp in Section 4. A huge tent city on 2,033 acres, loaned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will house the 50, uuu inhabitants of America s new est, youngest, and busiest city. In effect it will comprise 38 “vil lages” of about 1,400 campers each. Boys from all walks of life, of all races and creeds, will live to gether, exchanging skills, swap ping home-town products, and learning about the customs and traditions of many sections of the nation. The National Jamboree will al so have an international flavor. Scouts and Leaders are expected from Australia, Bahama, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Denmark, Great Britain, Greece, Iran, Is rael, Peru, Philippines, Sweden, Switzerland, and Venezuela. There are 63 nations around the world with Boy Scout Associations with a total membership of over seven (Continued on Page 8)
